Constitution Week USA - Gilbert - September 17 - 24
Constitution Week USA is both an educational opportunity and a celebration of the United States Constitution of America, which was signed on September 17, 1787. Constitution Week has taken place in Gilbert since it was founded by John Lewis in 2002. Lewis is the current Mayor of Gilbert. The week long event was brought to fruition by a dedicated team of patriots including Barbara Stowell, Bill Norton, and Jared Taylor, led by Councilmember Dave Petersen. Bill Norton built most of the displays and put thousands of dollars of his own money into the project. Over the years, many, many people have volunteered their time, money, energy, and passion to this annual celebration, which attracts thousands of visitors to Gilbert.
Most people have forgotten that on August 2, 1956, Congress requested that the President of the United States proclaim the week beginning September 17 and ending September 23 of each year as "Constitution Week."
This year's celebration begins September 17 with Scout Night, which provides an opportunity for scouts to obtain citizenship merit badges. Another Scout Night occurs on September 24.
An event celebrating religious freedom in America takes place on September 18. It's called One Nation Under God and features several speakers. America protects and unites people of all faiths under the banner of freedom of religion in America.
